旅 95日目 Strugglin with internet

Excuse me for writing in English, the internet café I am in right now doesn’t have Japanese input on it.

Bugger..

05/10/2007

Another great day here in Yerevan, sunny, warm, and an ideal day to wonder around town, but somehow I’ve made my way to the internet café.
Hmmmm…
Let me see what I got up to today..
The day started off like this
06:00am.Woken by Yasu, our mission to upload videos and photos on the web.
06:30am. Eating leftovers from yesterday.
07:00am. Republic Square. Our mission to upload stuff for web.
07:30am. Arrive in internet café. Spent nearly 2hours, but couldn’t upload videos for web.
10:30am. Arrive in a different internet café. Spent 1hour here, also failed.
11:45am. Arrive in another internet café, also failed.
13:30pm. Trying out the 4th internet café, out of luck.
15:30pm. Trying out the 5th internet café right now, and currently am uploading videos for the Web. Been here for almost 45min, and still on 20 percent. Tragic.

Well, wish me luck, and hope at least one video uploads by tonight, and if not sorry. The connection is ok, but for some reason like everywhere else in Central Asia, filtering website is common, and am struggling to get things in hand. So, if not, will try again everyday, so as I said above wish me luck!

Current situation
Our new home in Yerevan
Well, I got to say, life here has been somewhat relaxing, being able to cook for ourselves, staying with a nice Armenian family has given us an opportunity to get things sorted, or should I say trying to get things sorted. lol
The hotel (homestay) where we are at right now has a nice kitchen, a soviet type room(Cold, walls with cardboard sealing ), tap(only cold water, but surviving), cats(heaps of them trying to nick our food), and of course with lovely people. It is quite near the Yerevan railway station which helps, and the best thing about this place is that…
Its cheap!!
We only pay 3dollars per night; of course we don’t have shower nor a clean toilet, but so what!!
We haven’t had a shower for nearly 5days, so I guess Ill have one tonight using a bucket Yasu found the other night. But hey, when you look on the bright side of life here, spending less than 5 dollars per day, discovering people’s life here, and especially interacting with locals have been a precious experience for us.

People
Well, people here have been great like elsewhere we traveled. Getting invited to houses, meeting new travelers like ourselves, and yeah so for no problem and will be visiting a local lady’s house tomorrow who we met the other day. People here are friendly, welcoming tourists from around the world, but when it comes to having a conversation about been traveling through Azerbaijan, sometimes it’s a nightmare. Armenia and Azerbaijan have some bad relations due to the war they had/ or currently having (Currently under hold) where both country are fighting over land in the eastern part of Armenia. People in Armenia are sometimes offended when it comes to such topic, but generally they are curious about our culture, and love the Asian famous “Jackey Chen” and the Samurai spirit of Japanese People.

Environment
Surrounded by old soviet type buildings, with an atmosphere like other European countries (Markets, trees and parks everywhere), Yerevan is a nice small town to relax. I wouldn’t say living expense is cheap (in terms of food) compared to other countries we’ve been through, but local transport is reasonable (to ride a metro-20yen) so getting around the town is pretty easy. But will have to say, in terms of environmental issues, here in Yerevan also suffers from many pollution ranged issues, and from a travelers point of view, air pollution is one of the major visible problems here. Unlike Japan, there are no regulations for cars, so it seems as if I’m living in the 70 or 80s. Going out to the streets means traffic jam and taxi drivers yelling at each other and majority of the cars we see here are old rusty cars, spitting out dirty gasoline waste polluting the air. It is tragic to see such problem occurring, but the gap between rich and poor is still massive, and therefore the gasoline used in the country are low quality cheap gasoline, which is accelerating the air pollution, starting to leave many health problems amongst the people here. I will try and upload some footage of the current situation using youtube eventually.

Well, I guess that’s about it for today folks. Sorry for such a messy and long blog, will write soonish again!
Bye for now
